BCO Side-by-Side July 29 - August 3
The
Cary Cross Currents Chamber Music Arts Festival will be offering a unique opportunity for advanced high school string
musicians to study with the Brussels Chamber Orchestra. Until
now, the BCO’s “side-by-side” workshop method has only been
available in Europe and last year in Cary.Students
will learn large ensemble technique in a one to one ratio
side-by-side with the Brussels Chamber Orchestra, emphasizing playing
without a conductor and making every note count. In addition the
workshop will feature Gavriel Lipkind, renowned Israeli cellist, as
guest soloist. New to the workshop this year, students will have the
opportunity to take a mentoring role in a creative arts camp
combining music and visual art offered by the Town of Cary. This
daily 45 minute class will allow students to pass from their role as
student into a leadership position in order to inspire new
generations of arts enthusiasts. Just as the BCO sees the
side-by-side workshop as a learning through teaching opportunity, we
hope that the students will realize the powerful possibility of this
new side-by-side experience. The workshop will culminate on Friday
evening by a performance of the students, the Brussels Chamber
Orchestra and Gavriel Lipkind. APPLY:
Send a DVD, CD or MP3 format of one selection recorded in the past
year and a brief statement about your musical interests by 3/15/2011.
Students will be notified by 4/1/2011. (email, MP3 preferred)

JAZZ Side-by-Side July 30 - August 3
The
Cary Cross Currents Chamber Music Arts Festival will be offering a unique opportunity for advanced high school Jazz
musicians to study with the Jazz Fellowship, an Atlanta based
professional jazz quartet. After
the success of last year's Side-by-Side workshop for string students,
the Cary Cross Currents Chamber Music festival has decided to offer a
similar workshop for jazz musicians. Students will work side-by-side
in ensembles with members of the Jazz Fellowship
(www.willscruggs.com) and in student only ensembles. This workshop
is open to already established jazz quartets (other formations
accepted), and to individuals playing saxaphone, trumpet, trombone,
bass, drums, piano, and guitar. Students
will study jazz combo performance techniques, emphasizing
improvisation skills and creating professional-quality arrangements.
The
students will have the chance to play in small combos directly with
the professional players with the goal of preparing a professional
level program side-by-side. Students will also have guided time to
prepare work for performance on their own. The workshop will
culminate on Friday evening by a performance of the students and the
Jazz Fellowship. APPLY:
Send a DVD, CD or MP3 format of one selection that includes an
improvised section recorded in the past year and a brief statement
about your musical interests by 3/15/2012. Students will be notified
